About the Sacramento County Jail

The main jail provides safety and security for the public and all inmates and correctional staff. Recently, the cells were double-bunked, increasing the inmate capacity of the jail to 2,432 inmates.

The jail houses both male and female inmates and has various levels of security, from minimum to maximum. At present, there are 395 staff members, and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department oversees and operates the County Jail.

Please include the inmate’s full name, X-reference number, and housing location. All inmate mail MUST include the sender’s full name and return address. 

The Sacramento County Jail has strict inmate mail rules that must be followed. Failure to follow the rules will result in the mail being returned to the sender, confiscated, or held for evidence. 

• Do not mail weapons, drugs, or hazardous materials to inmates.
• Do not mail stationary or writing supplies.
• Publications that have staples are allowed, but staff members will remove the staples before giving them to the inmate.
• Do not mail paper clips, jewelry, plastic, laminated materials, or balloons.
• Do not mail stickers, labels, tape, glue, or any adhesives.
• Do not send greeting cards with pop-ups, music, glitter, or other embellishments.
• Do not send a mail containing bubble wrap or plastic wrap.
• Do not mail padded envelopes to inmates.
• Do not send Polaroid photographs or any photographs larger than 4 inches x 6 inches. Inmates are only allowed to possess up to 10 photographs at a time. Do not send photos containing nudity, sexual content, weapons, drugs, alcohol, or gang materials.
• Do not send cash to inmates.
• Mail that does not have a return address will be labeled “Dead Mail” and returned to the U.S. Postal Service.
• Please neatly print all information, and do not draw on the envelope.
• Do not send any contraband items or materials that may compromise the security of the Sacramento County Jail.

Books and Publication Subscriptions

You cannot mail books, magazines, or newspapers from a bookstore or yourself. Books and other publications will ONLY be accepted when sent directly from the publisher or a third-party seller, such as Amazon or Barnes & Noble.

All publishers must be verifiable, and all orders must contain the order slip. All books must be paperback. Hardback books are not allowed in the County Jail.

The following rules apply to books and publication subscriptions and deliveries.

• No hardback books of any kind are allowed.
• All books and publications must be sent directly from the publisher or an approved and verified third-party seller.
• Staff members may remove the staples from publications.
• Books, magazines, and other publications cannot contain nudity, pornography, sexual content, violence, weapons, drugs and alcohol, gang material, or instructive material regarding the manufacturing of drugs and alcohol or weapons.
• Inmates are not allowed to receive CDs, tapes, or DVDs.
• Inmates cannot receive cosmetics, food products, personal clothing, or board games.
• Note cards, writing paper, pens, pencils, and other writing materials cannot be sent to inmates. These items can be purchased from the commissary by the inmate.
• Inmates may only possess up to five books at a time.

How to Send a Care Package to an Inmate in the Sacramento County Jail

How to Send Money to an Inmate

If you would like to deposit funds into an inmate’s account, you can use the TouchPay Kiosk located in the Main Jail Lobby. To deposit money, you will need the following information. 

• The Main Jail Facility Number-257501
• The inmate’s full name
• The inmate’s X-reference number

You may deposit inmate funds by calling 1-866-232-1899 or visiting the TouchPay website at https://www.gtlfsonlinepay.com/portal/. To view a list of TouchPay participating retailer locations, visit http://touchpayonline.com/locator/.

You may also mail cashier’s checks or money orders to inmates. Make the money order or check payable to the inmate, and label them with the X-reference number. Please do not send personal checks or cash. 

Visitation at the Sacramento County Jail

Inmates are allowed two 45-minute social visits per week. Visitations are available Sunday through Saturday.

Rules for Visitation

• Inmates may not have more than three visitors, including children.
• All visitors over the age of 17 must provide a government-issued photo ID.
• Visits are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis. Weekends are usually very crowded, so visitors are encouraged to come early. 
• Visitors may only bring their photo ID, a small wallet, and their keys. 
• Primary visitors must be at least 18 years of age. All minors must be supervised at all times. 
• Do not bring cell phones, watches, recording devices, cameras, writing materials, food and beverages, alcohol or drugs, tobacco products, weapons, bags, purses, or backpacks. 

Dress Code for Visitation

The following dress code must be strictly followed by all visitors. Failure to follow the dress code will result in a denial of visitation.

• No revealing clothing
• No see-through clothing
• Do not remove clothing or shoes
• No bathing suits or workout clothing
• No clothing with mesh materials
• No short skirts, dresses, or shorts
• No backless, sleeveless, or tank tops
• No tube tops or strapless tops
• No logos that promote violence, racism, drugs and alcohol, hate, profanity, nudity, or sex acts
