The Intake Process

All inmates undergo an intake process at the county jail, which takes about 6,000 detainees annually. During intake, the inmate’s fingerprints are captured using the LiveScan system. 

Each inmate is photographed and can access free phone calls to contact family or friends and arrange bail services. If the inmate remains in custody, they must go through a thorough medical and mental health screening. 

Property Authorized for Inmates

Contraband Reading Material

  • Materials that promote sexual activity
  • Materials that promote the abuse of children
  • Materials related to weapons
  • Materials that offer instruction on chemical creations
  • Materials that promote or advocate violence of any sort
  • Materials that promote or instruct on criminal activity
  • Materials that contain instructions on altering electronic devices
  • Materials that contain instructions on altering communication devices
  • Materials that instruct on killing or injuring others
  • Any materials determined detrimental to the health and safety of the staff and jail population

Small religious medallions of no more than one inch by one inch are permitted and must not be made of metal. Inmates may also have medical ID bracelets and plain wedding rings with no stones. Inmates are allowed one of these pieces of jewelry. 

How to Send Mail to an Inmate

All inmate mail is picked up and logged by Boone County Jail staff Monday through Saturday, excluding any federal holidays. Greeting cards and cardstock are not permitted. 

The following are the general rules for inmate mail. 

  • Inmates can send and receive sealed mail from or to their attorneys.
  • All mail should be sent through certified postal mail.
  • If the inmate is no longer being housed in the jail, the mail will be returned to the sender. 
  • All mail must feature the inmate’s full legal name. 
  • Stamps are removed from the mail before being given to the inmate.
  • Inmates may write to anyone, but staff holds the right to limit the inmate’s interaction with others if found to be a violation. 

The following are considered contraband:

  • Any item that could be used as an aid to escape
  • Alcohol, drugs, weapons, dangerous instruments, and explosives
  • Items used for a disguise
  • Mail containing stickers, adhesives, stains, lipstick, or any other suspect alteration
  • Pornographic or sexually suggestive material

How to Put Money into an Inmate’s Account

There are several ways friends and loved ones can add money to an inmate’s account. The money placed into an inmate’s account can be used to purchase items in the commissary once per week, including personal hygiene items, clothing, and snacks. 

Online

You can add money to an inmate’s account online at https://deposits.jailatm.com/webdeposits/default.aspx. 

Once the inmate’s account has been credited, they can visit a jail kiosk and order commissary items. 

In-Person

You may also visit the Boone County Jail and deposit money into an inmate’s account using cash or credit cards. You will need to use the kiosk located near the front entrance to deposit money into an inmate’s account. 

Visitation at the Boone County Jail

Inmates are allowed one personal visit per week, and only one visitor is allowed at a time. An inmate can have a maximum of two immediate family member visitors at one time. It is important to note that no visitors under the age of 16 are permitted. 

The following rules apply to visitations. 

  • All visitors must present a state-issued photo ID that is not expired. 
  • Visitors cannot record or photograph inmates, staff, or the inside of the jail. 
  • Visitors who appear intoxicated or under the influence will not be allowed to visit. 
  • Staff members have the right to terminate any visit for safety concerns or violations of the rules and regulations. 
  • Visitors cannot bring cameras, cell phones, or other electronic devices.
  • Purses and other bags are not allowed.

Guidelines for Personal Video Visits

  • All video visits must be scheduled by the friend, loved one, or attorney of the inmate by visiting https://deposits.jailatm.com/webdeposits/default.aspx. 
  • Personal video visits must be scheduled 24 hours in advance. 
  • Inmates are only allowed two personal video visits per day. 
  • Personal video visits have a max time of 15 minutes. 
  • Each minute for personal video visits costs $0.30.
  • Video visits are monitored, and any nudity or illegal activity could result in the inmate losing their video privileges. 
  • Video manipulation is strictly prohibited and could result in inmates losing their video visit privileges. 

Lawyer Video Visits

Inmates have the opportunity to meet with their lawyers via video visits. The cost of these visits is $0.30 per minute. If an inmate has a public defender, the cost of these video visits is free. All attorney video visits must be scheduled on the same day.
