About Palm Beach County Jail

The Palm Beach County Jail is operated by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's office, located at 17901 U.S. Highway 441, Boca Raton, FL 33498. 

This six-story building was originally constructed in 1983 with a bed capacity of 838. The total bed capacity now stands at 2,166. Included in this number are infirmary beds and special management bedding.

The jail features three towers. The South Tower holds 1,285 inmates, the East Tower holds 418 inmates, and the West Tower holds 404. This facility is the largest of the three Palm Beach County detention centers. 

This county jail houses high-risk inmates, federal prisoners, and inmates needing special, mental, or medical treatment. The average daily inmate population at the Palm Beach County Jail is 1,769.

Inmate Services at Palm Beach County Jail

The Palm Beach County Jail offers a range of inmate services meant to help inmates in their day-to-day lives while incarcerated and assist them in transitioning to life outside of jail. The following are some services inmates can expect at the county jail. 

  • Educational opportunities are available, including classes for GED. 
  • A medical clinic is available for inmates 24/7, providing medical, dental, and psychological services. 
  • A commissary is available to allow inmates to make purchases from their accounts. Toiletries, writing supplies, snacks, and more are sold at the commissary. 

Inmate Visitation at Palm Beach County Jail

Inmates are allowed visitors twice a week. On-site video visits each last 45 minutes and must be scheduled in advance. You can schedule an inmate on-site video visit any time, Tuesday through Sunday, from 8:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. 

You cannot register for a video visit on a cell phone; you must use a laptop, desktop, or tablet. You can register for a video visit here. The following are some of the rules of on-site inmate video visits. 

  • The county jail strongly recommends visitors arrive 25 minutes early. If you are not checked in at least 15 minutes early, you will be considered late, and no late entries are accepted. 
  • All visitors are monitored and may be recorded.
  • Inmates can only have three visitors at a time, including children. 
  • All visitors over the age of 17 must present a government photo ID before entry.
  • If a visitor appears to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, they will not be permitted entry.
  • Visitors are only permitted to bring their keys and wallet to the visitation.
  • Cell phones and smart watches are banned from the Palm Beach County Jail.
  • If you have small children, you can bring one baby bottle and one blanket.
  • Lockers are NOT provided to visitors.
  • All minors must receive a visitor’s ID number and be placed on the visitor list.
  • Parents must present an original birth certificate before a minor can visit an inmate.
  • Minor children are not allowed to visit an inmate during school hours, even if they are homeschooled.

Visitation Dress Code

Visitation dress codes at the Palm Beach County Jail are strictly enforced. Failure to follow the dress code will result in you being denied visitation. 

  • While coats, sweaters, and jackets are allowed, you must wear a proper shirt underneath.
  • Same-day visits cannot be scheduled. You must schedule at least a day in advance and up to a week in advance.
  • Children can never be unsupervised during a visit for any reason. Unsupervised children will result in the visit being canceled. 
  • No smoking, food, drinks, or gum are allowed in the visitation area.
  • Visitors cannot exit and re-enter the visitation area without permission from the staff.
  • Loud talking, extraneous emotion, or any other types of disruptions are strictly forbidden.
  • Always remain seated during the visitation. Hang the phone up when you are leaving, and then stand.
  • If you do not show up for three scheduled visits, you will be banned from visitation for two consecutive weeks.

Visiting Hours

Visiting hours are available daily. The following are the hours visitors can come to the county jail to visit an inmate.

  • Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday, 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

How to Write an Inmate at Palm Beach County Jail

Inmates are allowed to receive mail from friends and family. You can write an inmate at:

Include the inmate’s full name, jacket number, and cell assignment. Inmates can only receive postcards outside of privileged mail. Any letters sent to inmates will not be accepted and will be returned to the sender. The rules for mailing an inmate at the Palm Beach County Jail include the following. 

  • The minimum postcard size is 3.5 inches by 5 inches.
  • The maximum postcard size is 4.25 inches by 6 inches.
  • All postcards must be a solid color and have no photographs, art, or graphic design.
  • All postcards must be handwritten or typed with blue or black ink.

Inmate mail may be refused for the following reasons:

  • The mail is improperly addressed, such as not containing the inmate's full name or jacket number.
  • The mail contains a letter or other unauthorized item.
  • The inmate has been released or transferred and is no longer at the Palm Beach County Jail.
  • The mail does not comply with the Palm Beach County Jail rules.

When mailing publications, they must come directly from the publisher. There is a limit of four books inmates can have at any time, including religious books. All books must be soft-covered. Inmates may subscribe to no more than one daily or weekly newspaper and up to four periodicals. 

How to Fund an Inmate’s Account

Inmates can use money from their accounts to purchase items from the commissary. There are several ways friends and family can put money into an inmate’s account. 

  • Individuals can come to the jail and use one of the on-site kiosks to deposit money into an inmate’s account. There is a $4.50 convenience fee for using the kiosk. The kiosks accept nothing below $5 bills. 
  • You can also deposit money into an inmate’s account here. 
  • Individuals can also mail an inmate money to be placed into their account. The jail accepts cashier’s checks and money orders.

There is no limit to the amount of money an inmate can have in their account. It is important to note that anything above $10,000 is subject to IRS reporting. Inmates are charged $3 a day for a fee. An inmate will never be denied essentials because they have not paid their daily fees.
