About Miami-Dade County Jail

The Miami-Dade County Sheriff's Department operates one of the largest detention facilities in the United States. On any given day, the detention center houses between 4,000 to 4,200 inmates. 

Here, inmates are in a pre-trial status or serving a sentence of 364 days or less. The jail also operates a Boot Camp Program to prevent jail overcrowding and recidivism.

How to Search for an Inmate in Miami-Dade County Jail

The Miami-Dade County Sheriff’s Department operates a website that allows you to perform a Miame-Dade County jail inmate search online. You will need to input the inmate’s first and last name to conduct a search, and you can also view jail mugshots in Miame-Dade county.

You can use the Public Records Tool to request inmate information. By creating an account, you can request and track or monitor your record request.

Friends and Family Video Visitation Information

To visit an inmate at Miami-Dade County Jail, you will need to be listed on the Inmate’s Approved Master Visitation List. It is the inmate’s responsibility to place all approved visitors on their master list. 

You will need to ensure you are an approved visitor. You will also need to register for an account through GTL. Inmates are allowed two video visits per week.

After registering for an account, please allow up to 24 hours for processing to be complete. Once complete, you will be allowed to select a day and time for your video visit.

 

Rules for Video Visitation

The Miami-Dade County Jail has specific rules that are strictly enforced regarding remote visitations. All video visitations are closely monitored and recorded for rule breakage. 

• All visitors must follow the rules and regulations of the Miami-Dade County Jail or risk the termination of their video visit and/or the loss of video visit privilege for themselves or the inmate.
• Do not attempt to record, live stream, or rebroadcast the video visitation. Photographs are not allowed. 
• It is the visitor’s responsibility to arrive on time. Video visitations begin and end at the scheduled time automatically. The Miami-Dade County Jail will not extend the visitation time for any logging-in issues.
• Do not use or display drugs, drug paraphernalia, weapons, or gang materials. 
• No same-day visitations may be scheduled. You may schedule a video visitation up to seven days in advance. 
• Proper clothing must be worn at all times. No see-through clothing, revealing clothing, or nudity are allowed. 
• Only registered visitors may appear on the call. Unregistered visitors appearing on screen is a violation. 
• Masks and face coverings must NOT be worn at any time during the video visitation session.

Responsibilities of Inmates

• Inmates are responsible for any rules that are broken, including those broken by their visitors.
• Inmates are responsible for maintaining their Approved Master Visitation List. Visitors not on the list will not be allowed to visit.
• No other inmates can appear on video, with NO exceptions.
• Inmates must wear their face masks at all times during the visit and must remain seated. 
• Loud talking, profanity, excessive emotionalism, suggestive behavior, and disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and will result in the termination of the video visit and possible loss of visitation privileges. 
• The video visit will be terminated immediately if the inmate breaks any rules.

How to Send Mail to an Inmate in Miami-Dade County Jail

No mail can be hand-delivered or mailed through any other service other than the United States Postal Service. Any mail sent by other couriers will be refused by jail staff. 

Mail must be written on plain lined notebook paper, white-lined tablet paper, or white-lined legal paper. Colored paper and unlined paper will not be accepted. 

Do NOT mail the following:

• No hardcover books are allowed under no exceptions.
• Paperback books, magazines, newspapers, and religious publications must be mailed directly from the publisher.
• When ordering books or publications, the package must contain an invoice with the company logo and contact information. 
• Books and publications containing nudity and sexual content are strictly prohibited.
• No greeting cards are allowed. 
• No postcards are allowed.
• Do not send newspapers or newspaper clippings.
• Do not send colored paper or envelopes.
• Do not send stamps, writing materials, or envelopes.
• Do not send inappropriate photographs. 
• Do not send Polaroid photographs.
• Mail cannot contain lipstick, perfume, glue, body fluids, stickers, unknown marks, bubble wrap, or padding.

How to Address Inmate Mail

You will need to include the inmate’s full name, booking number, full name, and return address. Failure to include these will result in the mail being undeliverable.

Miami Dade County Jail Inmate Phone System

While inmates cannot receive calls, they can make collect calls, but these must be prepaid. Friends and family can accept calls from inmates by setting up an online account and depositing funds. 

You can register for an account on the GTL website. Here, you can also make deposits into the inmate’s AdvancePay account so they can call you to collect. On the website, you can also set up notification reminders to be sent out when the inmate’s account balance is getting low.
