The Cole County Jail is responsible for transporting, housing, controlling, and caring for inmates. On an average day, the jail contains between 130 to 140 inmates, with a capacity of up to 207. 

The Cole County Jail processes approximately 6,000 people a year. The jail employs 33 full-time deputies and jailers and 12 part-time workers.

How to Send Mail to an Inmate at the Cole County Jail

Inmates have the right to free speech and are allowed to send and receive unlimited mail, though large amounts of mail received at one time may delay processing. 

The Cole County Sheriff’s Office has rules in place regarding inmate mail. Consider the following rules before you send any mail to an inmate. 

• No nudity, sexual content, photographs, or material depicting illegal activity
• No materials with language that promotes or outlines violations of the law
• No gang-related signs, colors, or depictions
• No contacting victims 
• No mail can contain anything considered contraband
• Inmates are limited in the amount of paper they can have in their cells due to fire and vermin hazards. Inmates may place extraneous letters in storage.
• Do not include paper clips, staples, binder clips, or metal in any mail. These will be disposed of before giving the mail to the inmate. 
• Inmates must fill out their full name and the address of the Cole County Jail. Outgoing mail that is not properly addressed will be returned to the inmate for correction. 
• All mail is sorted, searched, and read by Cole County Jail staff before being delivered to inmates. Any incoming mail that is not addressed with a return address will be marked rejected. 
• If you send mail to an inmate who is no longer housed at the Cole County Jail, it will be marked “No longer at this address” and returned to you. 
• If an indigent inmate does not receive funds after 30 days, they will receive two envelopes, two stamps, and writing materials for sending letters.

Visitation at the Cole County Jail

If you plan to visit someone in the Cole County Jail, you must know the rules. The following are the in-person visitation rules for the jail. 

• Any person or property that enters the jail is subject to being searched. 
• Violations of the rules and regulations could result in arrest and prosecution.
• No weapons of any kind are allowed inside the jail.
• All visitors to the jail must present a government-issued photo ID. Visitors must be approved entry by the shift supervisor and may be denied entry at the staff's discretion. 
• All items brought for the inmate must be inspected before being given to the inmate. 
• Visitors cannot accept anything from an inmate without prior approval from the shift supervisor. 
• No cell phones, radios, electronic devices, cameras, or recording devices are allowed at a visitation. 
• Visitors can only visit with inmates of the same sex unless another visitor of the same sex accompanies them as the inmate.
• Inmates cannot have visitors during the following hours:

           11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

           4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

            9:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m.

Inmate Rules for the Cole County Jail

1. Inmates are allowed to be removed from their cells to visit the day room. Rules are posted on the walls of the day room. 
2. Handicapped inmates are allowed to use their cell toilets as necessary.
3. Sexual acts, removal of clothing, or yelling are forbidden.
4. During exercise, inmates may jog, exercise, lay on the ground, write letters, or read books. Inmates cannot cross any yellow lines.
5. Inmate counts may be conducted at any time.
6. Inmates will be issued two pairs of socks, underwear, an undershirt, an outer shirt, pants, and one pair of shoes.
7. Other rules are available in the rule handbook given to all inmates.

Inmate Meal Schedule

Meal times are as follows for inmates:

Breakfast: 6:00 a.m.

Lunch: 12:00 p.m.

Dinner: 5:00 p.m.

All inmates are required to eat in the day room. Inmates are issued a cup and required to keep up with it during the day. A water dispenser is available in the day room. 

Each inmate is given a drink mix packet with each meal. This packet contains vital nutrients necessary for good health, and inmates are encouraged to consume it in water with each meal. 

Inmate Medical Services at Cole County Jail

Inmates who need emergency medical services can use the intercom to request them. Inmates who see another inmate who needs medical help should contact jail staff immediately. 

Inmates are financially responsible for their medical services. The co-pay fees include the following. 

• Medical protocols and nursing evaluations: $10.00
• Doctor visits: $20.00
• Covered medications: $10.00 per medication for a one-month supply
• Transports to a medical clinic or hospital: $50.00 per day

It is important to note that some medications may not be covered by the jail’s medical contract service. These drugs will cost inmates the full price.
